Capt. Gary Augustus  Johnson
It is with great sadness that the family of Capt. Gary Augustus Johnson, 73, of Lunenburg, announces his passing on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at home.

Born in Chester, Gary was adopted from the Ideal Maternity Home by the late Augustus “Gus” and Mary (Tanner) Johnson.

Gary started his sea going career during the summers at the early age of twelve and went on to fish full time with MacLeod’s Fishery at the age of fifteen on the fishing vessel, Shirley and Joyce. He continued to fish with Adams and Knickle for over 37 years and was Captain on the Sharon Dawn I, the Blue Dawn and the Ladona May, until 1996. He then fished deep sea clams out of Newfoundland with Clearwater on various factory trawlers, retiring in 2008.

Active in his community, Gary was a member of the Lunenburg Curling Club, the Bluenose Golf Club, associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #23, Lunenburg and Unity Lodge, #4 of the Masonic Order.

In his retirement years he enjoyed working outside in his garden, cultivating his pumpkins and strawberries and spending cherished moments at home with his family and grandkids whom he adored.

Gary is survived by his wife, the former Diane Levy; daughter, Diana Johnson (Miles Mortensen), Lunenburg; sons, Mark (Tricia MacLeod) Halifax; Peter, Halifax; grandchildren, MacKenzie, Wyatt, Ryan, Mya; sister, Carolyn (Terry) Lohnes, Garden Lots and sister-in-law, Corinne Johnson, Lunenburg; half-brother, Harold Ross and half-sister, Wendy Mullin both of New Brunswick; brother-in-law, Donald (Irene) Levy of Riverport and several nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his special friend, Jamie Adams of Newfoundland, whom he mentored throughout his fishing career.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Ricky; birth mother, Elaine “Totty” Mullin and a half brother, Gary Ross.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A gathering for family and friends to celebrate Gary’s life will be held Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Lunenburg Fire Department, 25 Medway St. Lunenburg. Interment will be at a later date at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.

Flowers from the immediate family only. Memorial donations may be made to Lunenburg Fishermen’s Memorial Monument, Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.
